Woodstock Poster Designs: Then and Now
This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair, the three-day music festival that took place in Bethel, New York, in August, 1969. For five decades, Woodstock has stood as an icon of the hippie movement and American culture. The festival brought together half a million people with the promise of three days devoted solely to peace, love and music. There was no social media to invite friends, or a fancy website to promote the event. No sirree. The iconic Woodstock poster was their main form of promotion. That and word of mouth, radio shows and alike. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts – a museum and cultural center located at the site of the original festival – held a nationwide poster design contest. And just as Woodstock was no ordinary music festival, Bethel Woods proudly declared that this was no ordinary poster design contest. Students, amateurs, and professionals alike were called to design a poster that best embodied the spirit of Woodstock and highlighted their own individuality and passion.

Print design is the design that appears as printed materials and media instead of in digital spaces. No matter how much digital dominates, brands still need print design services for event materials, posters, billboards and other forms of out-of-home campaigns, even business cards and reports. While some might think that print design is a fading art, Superside believes print design is thriving more than ever before. It's the secret sauce behind crafting memorable brand experiences, from unforgettable editorials and books to the eye-catching signage that stops people in their tracks.
A print designer specializes in creating assets intended for print rather than digital distribution. Their role involves conceptualizing, designing and preparing printed materials, such as posters, brochures, magazines, packaging, business cards, banners and more. Print design is another design specialty that falls under the general scope of graphic design services. They use their skills and knowledge to develop compelling layouts. When needed, they can also translate digital concepts to print without diluting the core concepts.
Print materials extend a brand or campaign’s message beyond the screen, reaching audiences during their commutes, at events or when they’re reading print publications. While digital channels continue to grow, trade shows and conventions haven’t gone 100% digital yet. And, in some markets, you may only be able to access traditional billboards rather than digital. Being able to get printed materials whenever you need them, lets you easily adapt to market and audience needs.
